Consumers will pay more for goods they can touch, Caltech researchers say | Science Blog

As retailers, we inherently know this to be true but it's nice to have our theories supported by science. In my personal shopping, I know this to be true. I hate having to ask someone to get me a pair of shoes to try on; if I can pull the box off the shelf (think DSW or even Payless), I am more likely to buy. At the antique mall, all those treasures behind locked glass doors, barely get a glance from me. Make-up counters in department stores continue to thrive – and at much higher retails – when you get to try the product and you have the assistance of the make-up artist. And, the dessert example in the article… They must be reading my mind! I'll have one of each!
